This completes the reusable shopping bag

A reusable shopping bag reduces rubbish

However, you don’t have to buy a shopping bag, but most of them end up in landfills. A shopping bag made of recycled material significantly reduces waste.

So don’t hesitate to buy a canvas bag from the store, but make your own reusable shopping bag yourself with the following instructions!

Means

  • 2 fabric napkins, whatever you can find in your home
  • 2 thick straps
  • Patterned fabric for decoration (as much as you need)
  • Cardboard
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors
  • Chalk for fabric marking
  • Pencil
  • Buttonholes
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron

Decoration of a homemade shopping bag

  • First, cut a rectangular piece of cardboard about 15 x 11 cm in size.
  • Place this piece of cardboard on top of the patterned fabric and draw the outline of the patch with chalk. This is the first stage of decoration.
  • Leave an extra about 2.5 cm around it to form a hem.
  • Iron the piece of fabric and form a hem (it is easier to sew with a machine).
  • Using buttonholes, attach this patch of fabric to one of the cloth napkins, where you think it is best (in the middle, at the corner, or wherever you want).
  • Sew the patch in place with a sewing machine. You can also do this manually if you wish. However, the final sewing step should be done with a machine to make the shopping bag more durable. But if you can make the stitch strong enough by hand, do wonders.

  • Once the patch is in place, place another napkin on top of it and fasten the napkins together with knitting needles on the three sides of the rectangle.
  • Keep in mind that the decoration should stay between the two napkins and that you are sewing from the inside of your future canvas bag.
  • Sew the three sides of the napkins that you fastened with safety pins. Be careful which side of the bag will be the mouth of the bag so that the decoration stays right.
  • Attach a triangle to the bottom corner of the bag with needles and sew it to finish the bottom of the bag. Do the same for the second lower corner as if to round it ( as in the first image in this article ).
  • Lastly, make a hem at the top of the bag (open side) and sew it with the machine.

Bag handles

Now it’s time to attach the handles to the bag.

  • Cut two 30-centimeter straps. You can make them longer; measure them only as long as you want and cut them out.
  • Attach the straps to the top of the bag with safety pins.
  • Attach the rectangular straps to the bag with a sewing machine and Finish them with an X. This makes the handles stronger and more durable.

More ideas

Use the instructions above to make all kinds of different types of reusable shopping bags. Use only your imagination!

For example, you can use a simple thick white fabric and paint all kinds of patterns on it. You can even organize a craft day for the whole family and let the children help! You don’t have to be any Picasso to be able to paint a beautiful pattern on your bag.

You can also combine napkins or patterned fabrics (or whatever) with different colors to make the Bag colorful and original.

If you don’t believe in your painting skills, write a funny or meaningful phrase in the bag. You can use cloth bags for this. This is an easy option and the end result is beautiful.

Making a reusable shopping bag is not as difficult as you think. Just remember to make sure your stitches are strong, in fact, you should test the bag before taking it to the grocery store to avoid damage.
